Student Assistant, Online and Distance Learning Position

Job Description

The ODL Student Assistant will provide technical and administrative support for virtual courses, online courses, and related academic technology resources at SAIS. Reporting to the Manager of Academic Technology, the SA will help manage the day-to-day support operations of ODL and will also participate in the development and implementation of new, technology-driven teaching and learning methods.

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Assist in the development and implementation of online course sites in Blackboard, including layout, video recording, assignments, captions, transcripts, and other activities
  • Conduct quality assurance reviews of online course sites, including ensuring compliance with ADA accessibility standards
  • Provide training on academic technologies to faculty, staff, and students
  • Troubleshoot, resolve, and/or escalate technical issues with academic technology systems, including Zoom, Blackboard, Panopto, EvaluationKit, and others
  • Perform user management for Blackboard and other academic technologies
  • Maintain support request ticketing process
  • Assist in the development and updating of academic technology support documentation
  • Monitor ODL support email account for Academic Technology support requests, and respond to requests in a timely and professional manner
  • Triage support requests received via phone, email, and in-person office visits
  • Maintain process for checking computer and other equipment in and out to faculty and staff
  • Make updates to the ODL website
  • Conduct research on new and emerging academic technologies
  • Other tasks as assigned


  • Interest in the thoughtful application of technology tools to enhance teaching and learning at SAIS
  • High level of aptitude with computer systems and the ability to learn new technology skills quickly
  • Competency with standard software platforms, including Microsoft Office, Outlook, internet, and others
  • Ability to interact with faculty, staff, and students effectively and convey information in a clear, understandable manner
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills
